Yesterday afternoon before the movie in Grant Park started I had time to finish the book I started Monday morning on my way to work, Fahrenheit 451. Now that I have read the book I can see how the author is so frustrated with the idea many people have of the book as mentioned in Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451 Misinterpreted. The book is often referred to as being focused on how the government encourages censorship, but in reality the book is more focused on how it’s world’s citizens have forgotten about reading, thinking for themselves, and simply let the entertainment of television and portable audio devices take over their minds instead.
The idea that such things as portable media players and larger than life TVs with half-second camera shots in large doses can dull the mind is a very interesting one. People in the book and people in many parts of the western world today share many things in common. Don’t get me wrong the world of 451 and America today are different, but they have similarities. There are many people who would much rather see the movie then read the book. A look at the media today shows a mass of hype, buzz and other non-substantive entertainment. That is one of the reasons I am pursuing training in film and media. I’d like to put some stuff out that have more substance then many of the media outlets today have. There is some good stuff out there already, but I’d like to see that pool of work grow.
If you have not yet read Fahrenheit 451, you are missing out on a great story!

The crowd at the park downtown before Double Indemnity started. Lots of people.Â
